IN CHARACTER
Name: Victor Sullivan (or Sully for short)
Canon: Uncharted
Canon Point: From Uncharted 4, when Sully and the two brothers are in the plane on the way to King’s Bay
Age: 64
History:Over here!
Personality:
“They call me Silver Fox”
In one of Nathan Drake’s journal entries in Uncharted 3, Nate draws a portrait of Sully and writes, “They call me Silver Fox” next to it. While it isn’t exactly proven in game to be an actual quote by either of the characters, it is a good description of the kind of person Sully is. Sully spent a good chunk of his life working with various nefarious types of people, and has done his fair share of scamming, conning, and thieving in addition to his treasure hunting. He is crafty, often seen helping Nate plan and figure out heists, and is always looking for the best outcome possible that will benefit himself and those he works with. As such, he is very good at weeding out people’s intentions and negotiating deals on behalf of his own clients or for himself. He is also a great improviser, and is always able to use his wit and charisma to talk his way out of tight situations if need be.
Indeed, the developers even describe Sully as being “possessed of a silver tongue”—alluding to his charisma and ability to talk his way out of tough situations. An example of this can be seen in Uncharted 1, after it is revealed that Sully is alive and working with a mercenary named Gabriel Roman. While Nate initially believes that his friend might have been working for them all along, Sully reveals that he only gained their trust to ensure that he stayed alive and to continue to look for the treasure he and Nate were seeking. The fact that he was able to keep up the pretense, and even dupe one of his best friends, is a testament to his ability to improvise, negotiate, and talk his way through potentially dangerous situations.
That being said, he does remain rather cautious when faced with new challenges or dangerous obstacles, often offering words of caution and pragmatism if he feels that something might be too risky, or encouraging Nate to take it slow rather than running into a situation with guns blazing.
“He would go to the ends of the earth for you, Nate.”
Victor is ultimately a kind hearted and extremely loyal man to those he holds dear to him. He will do anything to help them if they ask him, even if it means putting himself into life threatening situations to do so. A good example of this can be seen in his relationship to Nate.
Sully considers Nate to be like a son to him. Most of their adventures together are due to Nate having found something he wants to pursue, and Sully rarely hesitates to accept the job despite the dangers they may face. He is always there to bail him out of jail if needed, and is always watching his back, whether that means during fights or when it comes to more personal matters like his relationship with Elena. He looks out for those he’s close with, and wants them to be happy, whatever that may entail for them.
“Victor is only ever in it for Victor”
The above being said, there are multiple times throughout the game when other characters have questioned Sully’s loyalty (although most of those theories are proved wrong in one way or another by the end of the games). Victor is greedy in the sense that he does always hope to find a big payout at the end of each adventure, although part of that is most likely due to the fact that he is often in debt to some person or another. As mentioned before, he is always looking for the best outcome for himself and those he works with, and as such has no problems betraying acquaintances if he believes it to be the right thing to do or if he believes there will be no dire consequences at the end of it. This can be seen when Nate and Victor first meet. Sully betrays his partner and associate, Katherine Marlowe, during a heist without much of a second thought in order to save a young Nate and prevent him from getting killed.
“You’re a dirty old man, Sullivan.” “Uh-huh”
Famously, Victor is known as a womanizer and doesn’t hide it. He often tells stories about his past randezvous or relationships with women, and can also be seen flirting with women throughout the game (such as Chloe at the end of two). Despite his rugged nature, he always makes sure to approach women with a gentlemanly charm and respect.
“Just gotta have faith.” “Yeah, that and a quarter’ll get you twenty-five cents”
Finally, like his protégée, Sully is extremely witty and sarcastic. He often deploys witty quips when he and Nate find themselves in tough situations, and will often add on to any banter that he and Nate might be participating in.
Abilities/Skills:
Hand to hand combat: Sully may be older, but that doesn't mean he's not capable of taking care of himself. He is a trained soldier and tends to lean towards a more brawling style when it comes to hand to hand combat. In a situation where a potential enemy is unarmed, he's capable of landing a few good punches and knocking them out.
Guns: Sully is capable of using a variety of guns, and has shown prowess in types such as pistols, automatic rifles, and rocket launchers.
Piloting planes/boats & Navigation: In addition to driving, Sully is capable of piloting both planes and boats, and even has his own plane back home. His training also taught him how to read stars, maps, and even wind charts, making him an excellent navigator for the group.
Thievery: Nate didn't learn everything he knows off the streets. Sully had a hand in teaching the kid all he knows about thievery, and even demonstrates a knowledge of it himself including pickpocketing or planning bigger heists/cons in collaboration with Nate or by himself.
Stealth: One has to know how to move quietly when one is trying to steal expensive artifacts, and Sully is a master at it.
Strength/durability: Sully is often seen doing just as much of the physical work as any of his colleagues are, which includes scaling tall buildings, moving large objects, or even landing on his ass a couple of times. But no matter what may entail, he is always quick to get back on his feet and keep pushing forward.
Excellent memory: In Uncharted 3, it's shown that Sully has an excellent memory, and is capable of memorizing coordinates or important information in a short amount of time.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
Smooth talker: Sully is often described as being "silver tongued" due to his ability to improvise or talk his way out of trouble. It also helps with the ladies.
Loyalty: Sully is extremely loyal to those he trusts and holds dear and will do just about anything for them at any time of the day, even if it means putting himself into danger.
Intelligence/Experience: Sully has traveled a lot and been through many crazy experiences. He's capable of helping his partners solve puzzles or clues and never hesitates to provide his own thoughts or advice on a situation when needed.
Kindness: Ultimately, Sully wants what's best for his friends and close acquaintances and will go out of his way to help them with whatever they may need. If someone asks for his help, he's usually there by the next day.
Improvisation: Sully is capable of thinking on his feet in tough situations, and his improvisation skills have helped him get out of a many sticky situations. He's capable of adjusting quickly to whatever may be thrown at him and changing his course/plans on a whim if necessary.
Weaknesses
Women-He enjoys the company of women, and can sometimes get blind sighted by them.
Treasure/gold/money-It's made clear that while Sully enjoys the thrill of each adventure, what he's truly interested in is the end product. Instead of focusing on the history or stories of the pirates or explorers like Nate or Sam do, his one question is always something akin to "where is the treasure?" In addition, Sully often finds himself in debt to various people, thus his obsession with trying to get more money. As he says, “A metaphor ain’t gonna pay your bills, kid.”
Nate-Nate is like a son to him, and as such he always tries to keep his best interest in mind (at least as much as being a thief can do). As Elena tells Nate in Uncharted 3, Sully "would go to the ends of the earth for" Nate and is always there to watch his back.
Adrenaline hunter-Sully wouldn't be in this business so long if he didn't enjoy the adrenaline of it all. Whenever a job is finished, he is always seeking the next job, and it is always usually something dangerous.
Police/Authorities-Sully doesn't actively try to fight authority, but his job does entail breaking the law and so he would really rather stay out of their way as much as possible.
Cigars-Sully is an avid smoker and is rarely seen without a cigar in his mouth or hand
